Founder background

Technical depth, investigative judgment, and a career built through service.

Douglas Peters is a U.S. Air Force Iraq War combat veteran, licensed North Carolina private investigator, founder of DarkWater Associates, and principal-level cyber threat hunter. His hands-on exploration of computers and software began in childhood nearly 30 years ago. That is presented separately from his professional cybersecurity career, which began in 2013 in digital forensics and technical e-discovery before progressing into cyber-threat engineering and principal threat hunting.

Since 2017, his principal-level threat-hunting work has included detection strategy, ransomware defense, cyber threat intelligence, incident response, malware analysis, OSINT, evidence preservation, and leadership-ready reporting in Fortune 100, energy, nuclear-generation, and critical-infrastructure environments.

For a DarkWater client, that background means direct access to a senior practitioner who can evaluate uncertain signals, document what is supportable, explain limitations, and translate technical or investigative details into a practical next decision.

Public-private experience

Federal and industry coordination—accurately stated.

Douglas’s public-private experience includes former private-sector participation in the U.S. Secret Service-led Maryland Electronic Crimes Task Force and participation in InfraGard through the InfraGard Maryland Members Alliance.

In employer-authorized professional roles, he has also participated in cyber-incident reporting, technical coordination, information sharing, and briefings involving FBI Cyber personnel, Department of Defense stakeholders, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, CISA, and the E-ISAC.

These experiences strengthened his approach to evidence, escalation, cross-sector communication, and the difference between an intelligence lead and a verified fact.
